 THE ASSOCIATIONS PROFILE FROM 1995 – 2004

1.0      Preamble

The Tanzania Industrial Relations Association (TIRA) is a non- government Organization (NGO) which was established in 1994. It was the second Industrial Relations Association to be established in Africa after the Nigeria Industrial Relations Association (NIRA). To date there are four such Associations in Africa. These  countries are Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa. 

TIRA holds a certificate of Registration No. SO 7901 which was issued on the  15th January 1994 by the Registrar of societies. It was Affiliated to the International Industrial Relations Association (IIRA) based in Geneva in October, 1994. Among other objectives of the Association is to promote the study and practice of Industrial Relations in Tanzania.

2.0      Training

TIRA’S main objectives are three fold – Information dissemination, Research and Training in the pursuit of the training activities TIRA have been conducting seminars and workshop in Iringa & Ruvuma in 1995. In 1996 we conducted one workshop in Morogoro while in 1997 we conducted in preparation to the 2nd IIRA Africa Regional Congress which was held in Harare Zimbabwe latter that year. In 1998 we conducted two workshops one in Arusha and other in Zanzibar where the subject of labour laws and privatization were the main topics in these workshops. Also the subject of the new Trade  Union Act of 1998 were on discussion.

In fact from 1997 to date TIRA has established six  centres in the country where seminars and workshop are conducted each year. These centres are Arusha in month of March and Mwanza in the month of May or June while in Zanzibar we conduct our seminars or workshops in September/ October each year, others are Morogoro, Tanga and Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region. We have also conducted. In- house workshops/ seminars in public and private institutions. In 1999 the Tanzania Railways Corporation invited us for a one week workshop of its TRAWU union field Branch which was also attended by a number of their district officers. This workshop was conducted in Morogoro

In September 2000 we had one In – house seminar of the then Ashanti now Geita gold mines in 2001 October we had one seminar for Air Tanzania Union field Branch. In December 2002 we had a two weeks seminar in Morogoro involving District and field Administrative officers of the Tanzania Railways Corporation in preparation to their privatization exercise.

In these workshops/seminars various labour related topics were covered in our training programme; such as Liberalization and Industrial Relation. The impact of Industrial Relations in the eve of Liberalization, Labour Laws, Industrial Relations, Sexual discrimination at work places and occupational Healthy and safety. We have also been able to train participants in the religious Institutions in the southern and southern highlands Regions.

Taking into account the present changes in Industrial Relation System in 2003 TIRA conducted a workshop/seminar in Zanzibarwhere the Employment and Labour Relations & Labour Institutions Act were our main topic.

TIRA conducted another workshop in Arusha at the GoldenRose Hotelwhere 32 participants attend this workshop in which the new labour laws we discussed. In July 2004 we had another workshop/seminar at the Tanesco Centre Morogoro where 20 participants benefited from our training in the New Labour Laws.
